Picasso kept the majority in his private possession during his lifetime. At the crossroads of art, literature and ethnography, this exhibition dedicated to Michel Leiris is the first of its kind. As a prominent 20th century intellectual, though relatively unknown, Leiris was both a poet and an autobiographical writer, as well as a professional ethnographer and very close friend of many great artists and writers of his times.

In the early s, he moved between France and Spain before finally settling in Paris in There he experimented with a number of styles and produced his own original ones, reflected in his 'Blue' and 'Rose' periods. In Picasso painted 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', a revolutionary work that introduced a major new style - 'Cubism'. Picasso worked closely with the French artist Georges Braque in the development of this style. When Picasso rejected academic studies of art in , returning from Madrid to Barcelona, he fell in with the forward thinking set that called The Four Cats their second home.
Known as modernistes or decadentes , this community turned to French art nouveau, distinguished by sinuous contour lines, simplified shapes and pastel colours to move away from a realistic representation of the subjects of their art. However when Franco died the cafe was acquired by a group of restauranteurs who re-opened the Four Cats in the original spirit of the place.
